Checkered cake recipe

Ingredients

 - 2 cups of all-purpose flour - 2 teaspoons of baking powder - 1/2 teaspoon of salt - 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, at room temperature - 1 cup of granulated sugar - 2 large eggs - 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract - 3/4 cup of milk - Food coloring (two colors) 


Instructions


1. Firstly, preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare two 9-inch cake pans by lightly greasing them with butter and dusting flour on top. 


2. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. 


3. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, along with the vanilla extract, and beat until the mixture is smooth. 


4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture in three parts, alternating with milk, until the batter is smooth and well combined. 


5. Divide the cake batter in half and add food coloring of your choice (ideally two colors) to each half, stirring until desired color is achieved. 


6. Pour each half of the batter into separate cake pans, making sure they are evenly distributed. 


7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean. 


8. Once the cakes are baked, let them cool for ten minutes before removing them from the pans and placing them on a wire rack to cool completely. 


9. Once cooled, trim the tops of each cake so that they are level. Then, using a 3-inch cookie cutter, cut circles out of each cake (alternating colors) to create a checkered pattern. 


10. Place one color circle in the center of your serving plate, followed by the other color, and continue alternating colors until you've completed the checkered pattern.
